Re-examining familiar objects and directly expressing in oil paint what is visible, moves beyond what I imagine in a composition. This slice of life expresses the commonality of daily items painted in a colorful direct and expressionistic way.
The colors and values of my still life oil paintings are influenced by what hue is next to them- playing opposites, balancing warm and cool tones with muted and intense tones. Oil painting becomes a continuous process of balancing, judging, altering and refining.
Compositionally speaking, the patterns and relationships of various objects intrigue me when creating a still life in oil paint. Shapes and silhouettes between the positive and negative forms counterbalance the back and foreground demanding a closer view.
